Mafia Still Can’t Replicate Authentic Medieval Miasma
It seems the developers of *Mafia: Old Country* have, in their infinite wisdom, entirely missed the pungent point. While mere mortals might concern themselves with narrative arcs or the exquisite gleam of a newly polished Tommy gun, connoisseurs of historical verisimilitude demand *more*. Specifically, they demand an authentic *bouquet de decay*, a quality apparently delivered with aplomb by Kingdom Come: Deliverance. One can only wonder at the sheer audacity of a title purporting to immerse players in a "harsh historical European world" without first mastering the delicate art of virtual squalor.
How can a protagonist genuinely suffer without the ever-present threat of bubonic plague wafting from every cobblestone? What good are genuine struggles against overwhelming odds if the very air isn't thick with the invisible specters of dysentery and unwashed masses? Perhaps the designers of the Mafia series) were too preoccupied with the mundane mechanics of organized crime and its associated violence to properly simulate the rich tapestry of pre-modern pathogens. A truly immersive experience, it seems, hinges less on compelling character development and more on the ability to practically *smell* the historical setting. Such oversights truly mar one's escapist journey into the past.
